Matthew 5:7-12

‘Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

‘Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

‘Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Devotion by Julia Shiver

We hear a lot these days about the “War on Christians” or the “War on Christmas.” Certain factions within the Christian church certainly feel that they are persecuted. And it is strange that those factions tend to be white, upper/middle income, educated (privileged). Can they not see those in our society who are truly persecuted? I speak of our Black sisters, our Brown brothers, our Gay and Lesbian friends, our Bisexual or Transgendered children. All of us who don’t look like the majority, think like the majority, love like the majority, express ourselves like the majority; the people in power. We are called by God to help bring about God’s Kindom on earth for all of God’ children.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Amen.
