Luke 6:37-38

Judging Others

‘Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back.’

Reflection by Duke Yaguchi

It seems that is all that is happening these days. In social media and in the halls of Congress, there is just criticism and judgment. After the mass shootings, candidates cried foul and lamented why doesn't anyone do anything about it? Yet, why doesn’t congressional representative put gun laws up to a vote? It doesn't matter so much whether or not the law passes or not. Let the world see who votes which way. Then let the public decide at the voting booth, who to back or not.

But all we hear are lamentations, wailings and pontifications. Candidates cry out for the cameras and for votes, but they don't lash out on the floors of our democracy and put proposals up to a vote. They all say they have a plan. How many years does someone need to be a public servant before they begin serving the public instead of their own re-election desires? How many ears does one man need before he hears someone cry?

Here I am judging. It is too easy to do. I have to keep reminding myself to stop judging others. To take the plank out of my own eye, before examining the speck of dust in my neighbor's eye. I only wish our elected officials would do the same and begin taking up the responsibility of legislation.

Prayer

Dear God. Help me to steer clear of judgment and focus on the thanksgiving of God's benevolence. Amen.
