2 Timothy 3:14—17
But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it, and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.
Reflection by Janet Derby
The first time I took a Disciple Bible study class, I remember that this passage about all scripture being useful gave me pause. It was the focus scripture for the very first class. It still gives me pause when I read it, for there are certainly stories and writings in the Bible that I struggle to get any meaning out of. What I learned in that class and continue to recognize is that wrestling with those misgivings and uncertainties, particularly with others, helps to deepen my faith. Attempting to resolve our questions in a vacuum is difficult, to say the least. Hearing other perspectives through the years has enabled me to see aspects of God that I never would have otherwise. It is why being a part of a community like Pilgrimage is vital to understanding our connection to God and to others.
Guiding God, thank you for all who have helped me to develop my faith. Help me to continue to learn from and be inspired by those sacred texts. Amen.
