The Parable of the Ten Bridesmaids
‘Then the kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and slept.
Devotion by Julia Shiver
This is one of the last three parables in Matthew. All three speak metaphorically about the end times when Jesus will return to earth. It is all about enduring in faith, continuing in good works, and lighting the way for Jesus’ return. It illustrates that women are responsible for their own salvation. We are to minister to the poor, the hungry, the imprisoned as if each person is Christ himself. We are called to fill ourselves with the oil of faith, love, and good works so we will be ready when Christ returns.
Dear God, We call on your Holy Spirit to fill us with the faith and love to see us through the coming days until Christ Jesus returns. Amen.
