1 Samuel 18:1-4
Jonathan’s Covenant with David
When David had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was bound to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 2Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father’s house. 3Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. 4Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that he was wearing, and gave it to David, and his armour, and even his sword and his bow and his belt. 5David went out and was successful wherever Saul sent him; as a result, Saul set him over the army. And all the people, even the servants of Saul, approved. Reflection by Janet Derby I’m not sure if this is where the term soulmates originated but Jonathan and David certainly were an early example of it. The scripture doesn’t tell us that this is the reason that David is successful, but I do not doubt that it had an effect on him. Having someone who loves you and believes in you can give the confidence and belief in yourself to do your best. We should remember that we can encourage all those around us to be all God wants us to be. Prayer
God of Love, Thank you for the stories of soulmates we see in the Bible. Help us to give others support and encouragement to others so that we can make your kin-dom a reality. Amen.
