Mark 1:35-39

A Preaching Tour in Galilee

In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. And Simon and his companions hunted for him. When they found him, they said to him, ‘Everyone is searching for you.’ He answered, ‘Let us go on to the neighbouring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do.’ And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons.

The gospels show us again and again that throughout his life and ministry, Jesus would step away from everything and everyone, and pray. Jesus spent time being open to hear God’s voice. Jesus was also very clear that it was a two-way street; he openly talked to God, sharing the burdens of his calling and ministry.

No one can go through this life totally on their own. There are no “self-made” persons. We have all had help along the way, whether we asked for it or were even aware of it. Even Jesus, the living son of God, couldn’t do everything on his own. The great well of compassion and love that Jesus felt for us all came from his connection to God. Our ministry and service in Christ also calls on that connection with God. “And they’ll know we are Christians by our love.”

Dear God, You speak to us in many different ways, through prayer, music, nature, service, and study of your word. Help us to be open to hearing your voice in all that we do. Amen.
