1. The Mighty One, God, the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to the place where it sets. 2. From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth. 3. Our God comes and will not be silent; a fire devours before him, and around him a tempest rages. 4. He summons the heavens above, and the earth, that he may judge his people: 5. “Gather to me my consecrated ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.” 6. And the heavens proclaim his righteousness, for God himself is judge.
Reflection by Darlene Wagner
This Psalm illustrates a God who reigns above and beyond the chaos and trauma of the human condition. Many of our troubles arise from Nature; At the same time, human folly makes such troubles worse. For instance, many of the 450,000 COVID deaths in the United States are the result of the greed and dishonesty of unrighteous humans in leadership. Other troubles, such as racial injustice, are entirely the work of degenerate humans and their institutions. Amidst all these troubles, we can look to a God who is perfect in righteousness and justice. The fire which devours before him is not some angry punishment but rather a fire of redemption, purification, and healing. Humanity’s sole hope of maturing into righteousness is found through our God who is a consuming fire. Ultimately, all human beings will be included among God’s consecrated ones.
Invocation: Amidst these times of troubles, to you Great Father let us turn! To you, Most High we pray, who towers far above pandemic, death, chaos, and evildoers. We ask of you, the All-Merciful, for your right hand of healing midst all troubles! We ask of you, All-Righteous, hold in your left hand the violent men and women who seek to harm the meek and innocent!
