1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this.

Reflection by Duke Yaguchi

First and foremost, this is a proclamation of the Good News! The good news is that God is there for us and will be faithful to us and not abandon us, no matter how dark our days. Or how lonely or isolated we may feel, God is with us. During this ongoing pandemic, not many of us could have predicted how widespread and long-lasting it would become. At times, it is easy to think that God has abandoned us. But God hears our prayers. God is listening. We merely need to turn towards God and whisper to our Creator.

In the words of Paul Harvey from radio of yesteryear, and now "here's the rest of the story". The earlier portions of this scripture speak of our duty to help others, to love others. One of the best ways to show our love is to where a mask. In doing so, we do our small part to stop the spread of the pandemic. It's not a political sign. It's a sign of Christian love. It shows respect for our own lives and the lives of strangers and friends around us. Yes, God loves you! But God asks us to love one another as well. And now, you know the rest of the story.

Dear Lord, I know our world has become a political hailstorm of extreme views and closed hearts. Most of it stems from two political parties headed by two men that don't know our names. But God, you know us. Help us become calm inside so that our hearts become open, and that we may become more receptive to the words and the meaning of the Good News of Jesus Christ. In God's name I pray. Amen.
