New King James Version
And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse, Who shall stand as a banner to the people; For the Gentiles shall seek Him, And His resting place shall be glorious.”
Good News Translation
A day is coming when the new king from the royal line of David will be a symbol to the nations. They will gather in his royal city and give him honor.
Young’s Literal Translation
And there hath been, in that day, A root of Jesse that is standing for an ensign of peoples, Unto him do nations seek, And his rest hath been -- honour!
Jubilee Bible 2000
And it shall be in that day that the Root of Jesse, who shall be lifted up as a banner, as an example to the Gentiles shall be sought by the Gentiles; and his Kingdom of peace shall be glorious.
Contemporary English Version
The time is coming when one of David's descendants will be the signal for the people of all nations to come together. They will follow his advice, and his own nation will become famous.
Devotion by Laurie Spencer
I read through 28 different versions of this passage and thought these examples demonstrated how easy it is to be inspired (or manipulated) by a translation. I admit I related best to the last version that speaks of all the nations coming together. I didn’t like to think that the Gentiles were set apart but of course they are the believers and so they are set apart.
Still, my heart is drawn to the idea that all types of people, from all types of lands, and families, can know the love of Christ Jesus. They may never know the name of the Christ child, but every soul can be touched by divine love. And they can all rest in his glory.
Father, Mother God, loving me, help me to extend your divine love to those who need you most; no matter who they are or where they are on life’s journey. Amen.
