6 Hope of all hopes, dream of our dreams, a child is born, sweet-breathed; a son is given to us: a living gift. And even now, with tiny features and dewy hair, He is great. The power of leadership, and the weight of authority, will rest on His shoulders. His name? His name we’ll know in many ways— He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Dear Father everlasting, ever-present never-failing, Master of Wholeness, Prince of Peace. 7 His leadership will bring such prosperity as you’ve never seen before— sustainable peace for all time. This child: God’s promise to David—a throne forever, among us, to restore sound leadership that cannot be perverted or shaken. He will ensure justice without fail and absolute equity. Always. The intense passion of the Eternal, Commander of heavenly armies, will carry this to completion.
Devotion by Anne Mooney
When I read these words I automatically think of The Messiah. I hear a choir singing the words with all the parts interweaving amongst themselves and taking turns until they reach the part where they name the promised Hope. Altogether the choir sings, Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. The tune is majestic and powerful, like we imagine and hope the Messiah to be.
The promises of what this child-king will bring are extravagant. He will bring prosperity, sound leadership, justice and equity, and sustainable peace. We believe Jesus was the fulfillment of this prophecy, but these promises continue to go unfulfilled for our world as a whole. What does this mean for us? For our faith?
I believe we are still a people who are a work in progress. Jesus showed us a way, but the way is not what was expected. People look for the easy solution, a mighty leader whose authority directs the peace and justice. But true equity must come when all of our hearts are broken open to the wild and wonderful ways of our Creative God. God imagines miracles and solutions our limited minds cannot. Who else would imagine a tiny baby would soften the hearts of so many throughout the ages? Are we brave enough to follow in the footsteps of Jesus and do our part to help promote and sustain prosperity, justice, equity and peace for all. It will take all of us, but we have the power of the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace with us and in us, working through us.
Wonderful Counselor, Guide us with your wisdom. Help us discern the path you would have us take to bring prosperity, justice, equity and peace to our world. Amen
