4But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. 6And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’ 7So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.

During the Christmas season it is easy to get caught up in the busyness of all the Christmas traditions of shopping, baking, celebrating, and worshipping. While we enjoy all the things we do, we can sometimes feel enslaved or bound to them, especially when regular life is still demanding so much of our time and attention. Christmas can be a time of stress for many, if not most of us.
Yet Paul’s message reminds us that the coming of Jesus is transforming. “God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts.” We are no longer bound by traditions or the demands of the world, but now have the gift of God living within us, changing us and encouraging us to look beyond the traditions to living a life that lifts up ourselves and our neighbors. God is with us as we step up and step out to accept this gift of being a part of the family of God.
Dear God, thank you for the transforming gift of Jesus in our lives. Help us accept this gift and fully embrace our membership in your Holy Family. Amen
