Isaiah 11:1-2

The Peaceful Kingdom

A shoot shall come out from the stock of Jesse,    and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him,    the spirit of wisdom and understanding,    the spirit of counsel and might,    the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

Reflection by Janet Derby

Advent has begun, the season of waiting for the birth of Emmanuel, God with us. Winter has descended and with it, the darkening of days and the barrenness of trees. Yet, there remains the light in the darkness and the hidden promise of the coming of the new year. Isaiah’s words were a vision of peace and justice in a world too familiar with death and destruction. They come to us today also as a reminder that no matter how bleak the world seems, God’s spirit will bring wisdom and understanding. There is a shoot that shall come forth to bring God’s kin-dom to us.

Wonderful Counselor, Thank you for the reminders of your presence with us even in our darkest hours. Help us to provide wisdom, understanding, and counsel to those in need around us this holiday season. Amen.
