Mary’s Song - The Magnificat
46 And Mary said:
“My soul glorifies the Lord 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name. 50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. 51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. 52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. 53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful 55 to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.”
Devotion by Laurie Spencer
I spent 10 years in the Catholic Church after my divorce. I knew absolutely nothing about the church nor saints nor the devotion that the Catholics have to Mary. I fell into the church because, quite frankly, it was the only door that was open 24-7. It was a time in my life when I needed to be in church at any hour of the day or night to vent my sorrow.
Through my study and subsequent conversion to Catholicism I gained a real devotion to Mary. I never understood her before (past the basic Bible stories). But as a Catholic I spent time with this young lady. Her selfless, blind faith really help me to know that I was not walking alone in my pain. She became a friend to me.
The Magnificat has been put to song innumerable times. If you plug the word Magnificat into the search bar in YouTube, you can find any number of versions. Here’s one performed by a boys choir should you want 3 minutes of Christmas spirit weaved into your day.
Peace be with you. Let’s not forget that ALL of our souls magnify the Lord.
