Devotion - August 10, 2019

Luke 12:13–15

Then someone called from the crowd, “Teacher, please tell my brother to divide our father’s estate with me.” Jesus replied, “Friend, who made me a judge over you to decide such things as that?” Then he said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.”

Devotion by Chris Shiver

I think that one of the most important lessons that Jesus has been trying to teach me for 25 years is separating what I want from what I need. Because I am human I often find myself asking God in prayer for things that I crave or desire, rather than what is most needed by not only myself, but also my family, community & this world. I believe that for those of living in affluence, how well we learn and practice focusing on needs versus wants will determine how close we can become with God.

My Prayer:

Jesus, I pray that you that you will constantly direct my attention away from my own selfish desires, and towards what is needed most especially by those around me. Amen.
