I John 3: 23-24
And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. All who obey his commandments abide in him, and he abides in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit that he has given us.

It is the last words of this scripture that grabbed my attention. “And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit that he has given us.” It made me wonder if I had allowed the Spirit given to me to show up and shine. Would anyone who met me know that I abided in and with Jesus?
So I thought about what does a person’s life look like when they abide with Jesus and love as he commanded. I think for each of us that might look different, because we are all made to be unique, but I thought of many individuals who have demonstrated love and the light of Christ’s spirit in their everyday lives. In our own church there are people who show up weekly to work technology magic so we can somehow come together to worship online during the pandemic.
There are people who share their musical gifts with us each week. Some folks just give a lot of their time to making sure our property is maintained or that donations and food is shared with ministries like MUST and Family Promise. Then there are people within our congregation and our community who share their lives and follow in Jesus’ commandments by what they do in their jobs and homes like medical professionals, educators, ministers, counselors, business owners, financial experts, retail workers, hospitality workers, and salespeople. Everyone’s job touches someone else’s life and makes a difference in some way when we take the time to practice love like Jesus.
Dear God, thank you for sending Jesus to show us how to love each other. Help us follow his example so your Spirit shines in our lives so others can know your goodness and love. Amen.
