Deuteronomy 4:5-7

5 See, I have taught you decrees and laws as the Lord my God commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take possession of it.6 Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.” 7 What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to him?

Devotion by Laurie Spencer

Taking this verse out of the international realm down to a personal directive, God asks us to implement the sacred commandments as we enter into relationships and responsibilities in our daily lives. We all have temptations that pull us away from the lessons the Lord has imparted through the Bible. We may be too rushed to pray, too distracted to listen to our loved ones, too desensitized to feel the pain of a stranger. It’s hard to push those temptations aside but we are called to be responsible students of God’s laws.

Look at the energy we pour into teaching our children right from wrong. We expect them to make mistakes, but ultimately do the right thing. But when we wise parents hold the mirror up, what do we see? Are you a child still learning right from wrong? I surely am. We all are the children of God, and God’s desire is to raise us up to spread his love across all nations.

Father, Mother God, Loving me, help me to pray, to praise you, to listen to others, to share your love. Help me to be conscious of your presence in my life.
