Praise for God’s Help
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul! I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God all my life long.
Do not put your trust in princes, in mortals, in whom there is no help. When their breath departs, they return to the earth; on that very day their plans perish.
Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps faith for ever; who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry.
The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous. The Lord watches over the strangers; he upholds the orphan and the widow, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.
The Lord will reign for ever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord!
Reflection by Lynne Buell
It’s ironic that this Psalm was selected for today, because it feels like the whole world is in turmoil. Lately, however, our country is not only torn apart over politics, but we are mourning the loss of 11 lives of people who were worshiping in where they thought was a safe place.
Americans are stressed, on edge, and frustrated. We ask, “Where is God?” and “Why is God allowing this to happen?”. It’s easy to praise God when everything is good, but it’s also easy to lose faith in God when we’re in a state of pain, upheaval and mayhem.
After I read this Psalm, I thought, we should never allow the turbulence of life overwhelm us. We must never concede to the evils that try to overcome us. We need to pray for guidance from the Spirit. Pray for the families of all sufferers of violence and hate. Pray for peace. And finally, pray for the haters.
Loving God help us to learn how to overcome the obstacles that are thrown in our paths so that we can advance to the next level and closer to peace and love for all. Amen.
