Mark 10:46-52

The Healing of Blind Bartimaeus

They came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’ Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’ Jesus stood still and said, ‘Call him here.’ And they called the blind man, saying to him, ‘Take heart; get up, he is calling you.’ So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. Then Jesus said to him, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ The blind man said to him, ‘My teacher, let me see again.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Go; your faith has made you well.’ Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way.

Devotion by Julia Shiver

I feel like I should relabel this passage in scripture “The Healing of Julia.” My sight was rapidly declining. I had already given up reading and was about to give up driving. All within a few months. I was terrified! How could I do all the things I loved, take care of all the people I loved, see the things that I loved? We went to the beach for the week. And all I could do was mourn what I was losing.

I prayed. This congregation prayed for me. I received the Healing Ritual and a Prayer Shawl. They were all a great comfort. And I consider it nothing less than a miracle when I was sent to the right doctor who started me on eye injections for Age-Related Macular Degeneration. Within a month, my vision was back! I took great delight in our trip to the beach earlier this month. There wasn’t a moment when I wasn’t aware and grateful of my miracle.

Prayer

Dear God, thank you for all the comfort that was given to me during my time in the darkness. I know that everyone can’t receive the same kind of miracle I did. But I give you praise because your comfort in the darkness is there for anyone who asks. Amen.
