Matt 22:19-20

Here, show me the coin used for the tax.” When they handed him a Roman coin, he asked, “Whose picture and title are stamped on it?”

Devotion by Chris Shiver

The things of this world: Money, power, control, and persons who demand our attention, adoration and/or obedience. These are things that I have to deal with as I live a mortal life on this planet, but I have to struggle daily to make sure that they are not the primary focus of my life or that I do not put my trust in any of these.

The things of God: Love and care of others, spiritual growth, generosity & sharing, forgiveness, and trust in the One who creates, redeems & sustains me and every other person. I believe that the more I can keep my focus on these aspects of God’s Grace, the more I will experience what I want & need most – the presence of God.

My Prayer:

Jesus, I pray that I will focus less on the face on the coin, and more on the meaning of the phrase printed on our contemporary currency, “In God We Trust”. Please do not let the voices who shout the loudest here on earth drown out the still small voice that you speak with every day. Amen.
