The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfil the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.

Is this passage referring to the past, or looking toward the future? I am sure it was written for a then-contemporary audience. But what can it tell us now? In troubled times, can we look forward to a time when the righteous rise up?
I am fearful for our democracy and our planet. Our country is in turmoil and our world is being ravaged. But I look to God's promise to show us a way forward. Will I recognize the fulfillment of God's promise? Will I be among those who spring up to bring about God's justice and righteousness? I can only pray that I am.
Creator God, I await your coming, the fulfillment of your promise to your children. Please give me the wisdom to recognize your coming and the boldness to act upon your direction. And until that time comes, I pray for patience and hope in the future. Amen.
