1 Samuel 2:2
‘There is no Holy One like the Lord, no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.
Reflection by Janet Derby
I’m not sure what image was in Hannah’s mind as she prayed her belief in God, but clearly she felt that she could count on God’s steadfastness. The image that came to me was one of my favorite beaches - a rock beach on Swan’s Island, off the coast of Maine. When I first went there, I wasn’t sure it about it. After all, beaches are supposed to be made of sand, right? But as I sat on the large rock on the beach, I found it extremely peaceful. As the waves came and went, there was a sound of the rocks clattering against each other which was amazingly soothing. The large rock is a fixture of the beach – a never changing feature which gives permanence – unlike the shifting terrain of sandy beaches. Like that rock, I know that I can rely on God to hold me up and be a peaceful and firm foundation when too much around me is changing.
Holy One, Thank you for being a refuge of peace and security in a world which too often seems unstable. Amen.
