Joshua 6:20

So the people shouted, and the trumpets were blown. As soon as the people heard the sound of the trumpets, they raised a great shout, and the wall fell down flat; so the people charged straight ahead into the city and captured it.

Reflection by Duke Yaguchi

I have a problem with this scripture. On the surface it is about faith. Good triumphs over evil. But the way good triumphs is by destroying a city and killing practically all of the people. I know some people turn away from religion because it has been used to justify wars throughout humankind's history.

I also wrestle with the notion that God protects the good and vanquishes the bad. So why do bad things happen to good people? Likewise, why do good things happen to bad people? I know it isn't for me to judge, and perhaps there's more going on "behind the scenes". Still, I wrestle with scripture readings like this one quite a bit.

Dear Lord, help me to understand the role You play in our cosmic galaxy. Help me to understand my role in it as well. In Jesus' name I pray.  Amen.
