John 8:6

They said this to test him, so that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.

Reflection by Janet Derby

Sometimes we think that political divisions are something new. Apparently not. The scribes and Pharisees are using whatever ploys they can to go after Jesus. Jesus’ reaction does not seem typical. He doesn’t respond immediately, but rather bends down and writes in the sand. Wouldn’t you love to know what he wrote? Was it some symbol or word? Or was he just doodling to buy some time? I also want to know what the reaction of those around him were. Did they roll their eyes wondering what he was doing? Did they understand what he wrote? Did they, like many of us when we read emails, misinterpret what he was trying to say? Sadly, I don’t have the answers to any of these questions. What I can take away from this brief verse, is that I too, should pause before communicating or responding to comments that I may have taken in the wrong way.

Wondrous God, help me to understand that how I react to and communicate with others can have an impact on them and the world around us. May I have the patience and wisdom to pause and consider my response. Amen.
