John the Baptist Prepares the Way
The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Reflection by Laurie Spencer
For the second time this month I find myself writing about listening to God’s voice. How do we answer the question, “What does God want of us?”
Developing an awareness of God’s presence in our lives and the movement of the Holy Spirit in and around us can give us a deep insight into what the Lord wants of us individually. It’s not easy to do. Especially with all the distractions that come at us like bullets all day long.
But John is a character in the Bible who had visions and dreams and knew exactly what his purpose was. These days, seeing John on the street corner would be good reason to call the social services department I’m sure! But clearly he is a biblical character who paid attention to what God wanted of him. His life was dedicated clearly to that purpose. Wow. Think about it. What would your life be if you knew exactly what God wanted? Every step you took, every breath you drew, every word you spoke was what God wanted you to do. Let’s think about that.
Father Mother God, Let me be aware of the Holy Spirit in front of me, behind me, above me, below me, to my left, to my right, inside me. Amen
