Ephesians 4:29-32 New International Version (NIV)
29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

There are a few people in my life who are role models. These folks do not react quickly to situations. Therefore, they don’t say things they might later regret. They are really good listeners and especially good at encouraging others.
Maybe you are one of my role models. Many of my friends at Pilgrimage are kind, compassionate, forgiving listeners. Some role models are in my workplace. My Dad was a role model for quiet, non-reactive communication.
Stop to consider from whom you learn lessons of good communication. Who naturally exudes love and compassion? There is no better time, given the polarization of our society, to learn from those who are naturally gifted listeners.
Father, Mother God, loving me, grant me silence. Help me to turn off and rest. Open my soul to hear the quiet of compassion, the embrace of peace. Then let me share that loving peace with the world.
