Psalm 51:1-12

Prayer for Cleansing and Pardon

To the leader. A Psalm of David, when the prophet Nathan came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you alone, have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are justified in your sentence and blameless when you pass judgement. Indeed, I was born guilty, a sinner when my mother conceived me.

You desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have crushed rejoice. Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit.

Devotion by Rev. Krista

I watch a lot of the cable channel HGTV, everything from My Lottery Dream Home to House Hunters to Flip or Flop. I particularly like the shows that involve taking old, run-down homes and fixing them up to look modern and new. The resale value of the restored homes is always much higher after the renovations. The renovations require specific equipment and, in many cases, skilled workers to handle the most precious parts of the house. The projects take time, but it is so worth it.

Today’s scripture reminds us that we are just like the houses that are in need of renovation. In fact, we are desperate for a make-over, a spiritual transformation. Our recurring transgressions break down our spiritual foundation, leaving us feeling eroded overtime. When our foundation is weakened, we must seek to be restored from a ‘skilled worker’ who knows all about our precious parts and will handle our reformation with the care and love we need. A faithful God is waiting for us to provide an overhaul!

When our God-given renovations are complete, we are ready to receive a new and right spirit. This will allow the light to shine so others can see the reflection of God in us and through us. No matter how low or ‘run-down’ we may feel, in God’s hand, we can be restored, and a new spirit can come over us increasing our resale value. We are truly worthy of the renovation!!

Our Prayer:

Dear God, I am so grateful that you are a Master Renovator. I can bring my brokenness, my pain and my disobedience to you. I am so fortunate that you are waiting for me to pick me up and restore me. God, I pray for others who need restoration. I pray that they come to you to be made anew by getting closer to you. Please put a new and right spirit in me, and I know I will forever be changed for the better! Amen.
