“Never place a period where God has placed a comma”

— Gracie Allen

God is still speaking,

The 2006 television advertisement from the United Church of Christ began recently, and Pilgrimage continues its support in many ways. On April 2, we hosted “God is still speaking” Sunday, showing off the new laugh-out-loud funny ad and discussing the abundant welcome that Pilgrimage provides.

The United Church of Christ began its original effort in late 2004. Pilgrimage is proud to be a part of this message (click here to read more about the controversy regarding this campaign). Pilgrimage members have attended programs regarding the “God is still speaking,” campaign and enjoy sharing more about it.

Moreover, as Pastor Kimberleigh Buchanan says herself, God continues to speak through the words in the Bible, the basis of her message every Sunday.

Visit with us one Sunday to learn more.

God Continues to Speak Today

Reflections by Pilgrimage member Russell

I believe that God remains engaged in the world. I do not accept that God stopped trying to speak to us after the Biblical period. I believe that God has continued to try to break through to us, but, perhaps, there are times in history when people listen better.

Prophets remain in our midst!

To believe that God no longer speaks or has fresh messages to address the context of our times is to reject God's current and continued engagement in the world. What a dead faith that would be. To only look to what God told people thousands of years ago as the only source of guidance today would miss these later messages and messengers, and miss the point that those words were spoken to an entirely different culture and context.

God may speak to us today personally through the kind words of a stranger, a caring rebuke from a friend, a passage of scripture, or through modern day prophets such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Thomas Merton, Jimmy Carter, Dr. Martin Luther King, Billy Graham, or Pope John Paul II. It is up to us to keep listening!

Scripture Is Alive and Relevant Today

Reflections by Pilgrimage member Janet

The words of Scripture are still alive and relevant today. Stories from the Bible that we have heard all our lives can take on new meaning if we listen to them with the understanding that we must interpret them in light of our own experiences and the world in which we live. It also says to me that God continues to speak to us in a myriad of ways — through other writings, through other people and to us in our hearts.
