Music Ministry
Join a Small Group

As churches
grow, they always face the challenge of maintaining community
within the context of that growth. One way of maintaining
community is by forming smaller groups within the larger body.
Small groups within the congregation usually form around a
common purpose or common interest, but they often also include
other activities such as pastoral care and social activities.
I like to
think of the choir as one such small group. Those who sing in
the choir come together because of a common interest and
purpose: they like to sing, which is their interest, and they
provide music for worship, which is their purpose. Since
becoming the Director of Music at Pilgrimage, I’ve also directed
a lot of energy toward pastoral care within the context of the
choir. For example, we conclude every rehearsal with a time of
sharing joys and concerns and we have a time of prayer. This
keeps us aware of the needs of the members and allows us to care
for each other. I’ve also encouraged the choir to spend time
together socially because this gives us more time to get to know
one another. We have had two parties this year hosted by
members of the choir, and it is my hope that we will have 3-4
parties each year.
If you are
sometimes overwhelmed by the rapid growth of our church family,
I would encourage you to get connected to one or more of the
small groups in our church; there are several. If singing is
one of your interests, I would encourage you to consider joining
the choir when we start up again in September. You will find an
opportunity to participate in something you enjoy, you will have
fun and get to know others from the congregation in a relaxed
social setting, and you will be cared for by a very caring group
of people. Come and join us!
